Renowned chef Raymond Blanc attended the first day of the National Fruit Show last week to judge the British Tomato Growers’ Association’s (TGA) Tastiest Tomato Competition.

The competition comprises four categories - classic round, cocktail, beef and baby - and had 33 entries this year.

Cherry tomatoes Piccolo and Piccolini took five of the top six places and the overall winner was baby plum Santini, grown by Andy Roe of Flavourfresh Salads, pictured with Blanc. In addition to prize money from sponsor Marks & Spencer, Roe earned the David Stapley trophy, awarded by the TGA.

TGA chairman Gerry Hayman told freshinfo that the industry was “encouraged” by Blanc. He added: “We would like to work with apple growers as we believe we have similar issues, as in we concentrate on flavour and product value... We would be interested in some kind of joint campaign.”
