Tesco aims for healthy lunchtime rush

Tesco has launched a campaign to persuade office workers to eat healthily.

The supermarket is selling cherry tomatoes next to its sandwiches in handy-sized bags. Lunchtime tomato sales among office workers have risen and Tesco is considering bring other healthy vegetable combi-packs to its convenience range at the front of its stores.

Tesco produce category director Steve Murrells said: “We know that most office workers head straight for the sandwich section when they visit us at lunchtime. By putting the packaged tomatoes in close view we hope to encourage more people to consider a tempting, healthy option for their lunch.

The tomatoes are washed and ready to eat and cost 49p for a 100g pack and are sold in pyramid packaging. Murrells added: “Sales have been so good that we are now discussing bringing out other vegetable snack packs specially for the lunchtime market.”

As part of the campaign relevant produce is labelled with the 5-a-day message giving shoppers guidelines on recommended daily portions of fruit and vegetables.
