Total melon sales up by a third as UK’s biggest grocer expands range with new Waikiki variety

Tesco has reported a surge in melon sales this summer, with demand for both traditional and exotic varieties climbing thanks to the hot weather.
The retailer said overall melon volumes increased by 33 per cent in the seven weeks to the end of July.
The strong performance reflects continued consumer demand for fresh, hydrating fruit during warmer months, with retailers broadening their ranges to include more premium and exotic varieties.
Tesco reported that giant watermelons have proven particularly popular, with sales up 77 per cent year on year so far this season, which runs from May to September
The retailer has expanded its offering by launching the Waikiki melon, available in around 500 large Tesco stores and online. The retailer is offering whole Waikiki melons for £3 each with Clubcard (£4 without), while a prepared 450g pack is priced at £3.25.
Daniel Bentley, buyer for tropical fruit at Tesco, said: “We’re seeing growing demand from customers looking to try different and exciting fruits, particularly during the hotter, summer months when people want refreshing snacks and ingredients.
“Melons continue to be a popular choice because they’re naturally sweet, versatile and great value, with sales so far this summer up over 30 per cent. Our Waikiki melons also offer shoppers something a little different and are a fantastic addition to our fruit range.”
Tesco now stocks a wide range of other melon varieties. Honeydew melons are available at £1.50 (£1.87 without Clubcard), while cantaloupe and Galia melons are both priced at £1.50 (£2 without Clubcard).
Mini watermelons are on offer at £2 (£2.30 without Clubcard), and Tesco Finest OrangeCandy Melons are avilable for £2.50 (£3 without Clubcard).
