Nunhem’s Instense tomato is about to launch into a UK multiple just a year after winning the Fruit Logistica Innovation Award. The tomato variety, which retains its juice when cut, will be sold in a four-pack and described as a ‘sandwich tomato’ in 350 stores of one of the UK’s big four supermarkets in April.

This year the seed breeder estimates that production of the variety will be almost double the amount last year, at 160,000 tonnes, and the product’s popularity is going from strength to strength in both the foodservice and the retail markets throughout Europe.

René Henquet, sales manager at Nunhems, told FPJ: “We have had a great deal of interest in Intense since we won the award and it helped accelerate the customer recruitment process. Being a seed breeder, Nunhems in general is very production orientated company and for us to get that amount of exposure has been great.

“We are also working on a range of prepared coloured carrots for the catering trade. The colours include purple, yellow and white and is a concept in line with the eat in colour trend. It is early days, so it is not commercial yet, but we are at Fruit Logistica to check interest, which has been good.”
