Retailer slashes the price of four produce items in the days before Christmas

Coles has unveiled a new Christmas promotion that will see the price of some fruit and vegetable staples cut to just A$1 in the lead-up to Christmas.
As part of the promotion, the price of loose sweet corn, loose lemons, 1kg bags of brown onions and 1kg bags of carrots will be reduced to A$1 each from 19 December until 25 December.
The retailer said consumers will save more than 40 per cent if they purchase all four of the staples.
Coles’ chief commercial & sustainability officer Anna Croft said Coles is committed to providing quality and value to customers as they prepare for the festive season.
“We know Christmas is an expensive time for many families and they’re looking to save at this time of year. That’s why we’re working hard to deliver great value by lowering the price of popular fresh produce and hundreds of everyday essentials in the lead-up to Christmas,” said Croft.
“Whether it’s stocking up on delicious Australian-grown fruit and vegetables for holiday feasts or grabbing your favourite festive treats, we want to make it easier for customers to save more and enjoy the special moments this season.”
Coles said its research showed that 88 per cent of Coles customers plan to spend the same or less than last year on Christmas overall, and among those, 80 per cent are cutting back on groceries, while more than one in two (54 per cent) are planning to buy on special.
Coles said it expected to sell 2mn corn cobs, more than 1.1mn lemons, 790 tonnes of brown onions and 570 tonnes of carrots in the lead-up to Christmas.
Rocky Lamattina & Sons director, Angelo Lamattina, said it was fantastic to be partnering with Coles to help more Australians enjoy fresh Australian produce during the festive season.
“Coles is a trusted partner of ours and it’s been great working so closely with them on this promotion to ensure as many Australians as possible get to enjoy our great quality, delicious Aussie carrots for Christmas,” he said.
“Thanks to an excellent growing season and favourable dry conditions during harvest, our carrots are the perfect choice for the Christmas table - bringing a naturally sweet and festive touch to any festive meal.”
