The US department of agriculture (USDA) is getting ready to release its latest report on the Pesticide Data Program.

Michael Jarvis, director of public affairs for the USDA's agricultural marketing service, said 2009 data would be released by 19 May.

His statement came amid public debate about the report's release and the context in which it presents information.

Produce organisations including the Produce Marketing Association (PMA), the United Fresh Produce Association and Western Growers have called on the USDA to present the report in a way that ensures data is not misconstrued.

PMA vice-president Kathy Means clarified their request: 'We have been talking to the USDA, urging them to provide a little more context. We haven't been asking them not to release it.'

The environmental working group in Washington, DC, has also written to officials, requesting the prompt release of a report that usually comes out closer to January.
