With consumers making difficult decisions about their food purchases in light of the economic hardships across the country, US-based berry marketer California Giant is focusing on providing healthy food and value every day.

“We are maintaining our strong consumer messaging about health and fitness while ensuring our products are on the produce department shelf every day providing flavor, quality, safety and value for the food dollar,” Cindy Jewell, California Giant’s marketing director, said in a statement.

“Packed with antioxidants, Vitamin C and other valuable nutrients, consumers can feel good about adding California Giant berries to their shopping carts in 2009 as a valuable addition to a healthy lifestyle.”

The company remains committed to continued growth in products and acreage for 2009 and says its retail customers can continue to expect in-store marketing support with Point of Sale (POS) material and exclusive recipes as well as a new customized retail training curriculum for care, handling and merchandising of berries.

“Sweepstakes-based programs this spring and summer will provide additional value to the consumer as they log on to enter fitness based prizes in national promotions,” explained Ms Jewel. “A sweepstakes website will feature berry recipes, care and handling tips, links to partner websites for health and fitness tips and ways to support sports events and activities.”

California Giant sources berries both domestically and internationally. The group’s Florida and Mexico strawberry deal began in mid-December despite cool weather conditions preventing some of the early promotional opportunities retailers had hoped for.

In addition to new season strawberries, the company also ships fresh blueberries from South America and blackberries from Mexico.
