Avocados

Peruvian avocado exports are reportedly tipped to grow during the next few years as growers ramp up production due largely to the opening up of the US market, according to a report by Peruvian news agency Andina.

Latin American consultancy firm Maximixe claims growers are buying land on Peru’s northern coastline in order to boost volume and satisfy US demand from 2010 onwards when the country is expected to recover from the economic crisis.

Peruvian avocado production will increase by 5.4 per cent in 2009, Maximixe said, on the back of the expansion in planted area coupled with the continued growth of consumption.

Last year’s crop grew by 9 per cent alone as result of better performances in Lima, La Libertad and Ica.

While the Netherlands, Spain and the UK remain the principal buyers of Peruvian avocados, Maximixe claims the lifting of the phytosanitary barriers by US will provide a great opportunity for Peru to expand its overseas sales.
