Winn-Dixie

US supermarket operator Winn-Dixie Stores is to introduce a new design of its line of durable, reusable bags in time for Earth Day celebrations.

The bag, made from 95 per cent recycled materials, features Microban antibacterial protection which actively protects the bag from stain- and odor-causing bacteria, and continuously stops the growth of new bacteria, according to a press release from the retailer.

Winn-Dixie claims to be the first retailer in the US south-east to offer this built-in technology which will not wash off or wear away for the lifetime of the bag.

The eco-friendly tote, showcasing Earth Day designs created by the children of Winn-Dixie associates, holds the same amount of groceries as three plastic grocery bags and is available at all locations with a special promotion of five bags for US$5.

A new baby-themed reusable bag, also featuring Microban, is now available for purchase as well.

“We are committed to increasing and enhancing our sustainability efforts in every area of our operation,” said Robin Miller, Winn-Dixie’s director of communications.

“Our customers and our Associates are passionate about the environment and very supportive of our programs and initiatives. It's all part of being a good neighbour on both a local and global level.”
