Fresh Pod, the innovative sachet system that is placed in refrigeration units alongside fruit and vegetables to remove ethylene and extend freshness, has been given a boost by the results of research carried out in South Africa.

According to a recent study by QMS Agri Science, Fresh Pod Commercial Sachets not only remove 95 per cent of airborne ethylene – a natural ripening agent released by produce after harvesting and a cause of decay – but also have similar effects on bacteria and mould levels, including viruses, sour rot, blue mould, brown rot, fungi and airborne bacteria.

Ethylene control systems are available in many forms, but the recent studies by QMS have proven that Fresh Pod's system outperforms other products, including ozone generators, while being cheaper and more environmentally friendly, the group said.

If ethylene is not managed and removed in post-harvest produce, an average of 25-46 per cent of produce life can be lost, Fresh Pod revealed.

'It is therefore clear that removing ethylene from cold storage areas, which Fresh Pod's natural digestion process has been independently proven to do better than any alternative, provides manufacturers with quality produce, while reducing shrink and increasing profits.'
