Tesco's category director for fresh produce, Kris Comerford, is leaving the department only five months after taking on the role, FPJ can reveal.

Comerford moves to his new role as category director for chilled foods, which takes in dairy and convenience foods, on 27 July. The switch is likely to disappoint fruit and vegetable suppliers, who had spoken positively about his personality and impact on the category.

In a further surprising development, former Group Food Sourcing (GFS) director Darren Clough is returning from his brief stay in the Central Europe fresh food operation to take over Comerford's role.

Clough will be reunited with Matt Simister, the commercial director for fresh food who worked alongside him at GFS.

There are not understood to be any further changes in the produce department, though the supermarket did appoint Barney Kay as its new head of agriculture this week, taking over from Tom Hind.
