An Edeka supermarket in Hamburg, Germany, has hit the headlines after removing all foreign products from its shelves for one day in solidarity against racism, according to a report in TheLocal.de.

With only German products being sold, bare shelves carried various messages instead, including “Without diversity, this shelf is rather boring”.

Edeka customer Holger Krupp, who posted a picture of empty shelves on Twitter, compared the scene to grocery stories in Cuba.

“Edeka stands for diversity, and we produce a wide range of food in our assortment, which is produced in the different regions of Germany,” an Edeka spokesperson commented. “But it is together with products from other countries that we create the unique diversity that our customers value.”

The spokesperson added that the retailer had been “delighted” by the positive feedback it had received since the action.
