Agrexco train

Leading Israeli exporter Agrexco has teamed up with Zim Integrated Shipping Services to deliver fresh produce by train straight from the field to European consumers.

According to Agrexco, the aim is to minimise truck traffic in Israel and Europe, reduce the environmental impact, lower transport costs and boost proceeds to Israeli farmers.

The agricultural train will go from Nahal Tzin in the Arava to the port of Haifa or Ashdod, where Zim vessels will transport the containers to the Italian port of Trieste. From there the containers will be loaded onto a 22-car train and depart for their final destination in the Netherlands.

According to Agrexco, preserving the coldchain from the moment the produce is harvested until it reaches supermarket shelves around a week later is key to the success of this venture.
