Belgian retailer Colruyt's organic-only supermarket subsidiary Bio-Planet has opened a new store in Belgium.

The store, located between Brussels and Antwerp in the city of Mechelen, brings the company's total number of stores back up to five, with other outlets already trading in Antwerp, Ghent and Dilbeek.

Bio-Planet previously had a single store in the Netherlands, in the city of Eindhoven, but the company announced in May that it was closing after encountering problems with securing real estate and planning permission to expand its network further.

According to a report in Distrifood, the organic supermarket saw its turnover increase by 14 per cent in Belgium last year. 'The steady growth of Bio-Planet shows that there is a market in Belgium for organic food and ecologically friendly non-food products,' commented the company's Philip Sterck.
