A couple from Finland were the lucky winners of the promotional competition recently organised by Spanish vegetable exporter Cabasc for its European grocery retail clients.

In a statement, the Almeria-based company said that the promotion principally targeted Germany, the Netherlands, Switzerland and the Scandinavian countries where flyers were inserted into flow packs of aubergines.

Consumers were invited to take part in a draw by collecting three vouchers enclosed in the packs and sending them to Cabasc to win four days at the five star Envia Golf & Spa Hotel in Andalusia, in an idyllic setting between the sea and the mountains near Almeria.

Founded in 1964, the Cabasc cooperative is one of the leading exporters in the Almeria region with 230 member producers cultivating some 620,000 acres of land and producing almost 30,000 tons of export produce.

As well as aubergines, the cooperative produces and exports peppers, tomatoes, cucumbers, courgettes, green beans and watermelons.

In March 2009, Cabasc merged with four other major Almerian cooperatives to create a joint export company, the Unica Group, which is now the largest fruit and vegetable producer in Andalucía in terms of trading capacity and European export volumes.

According to Cabasc, several other companies have already shown an interest in joining the Unica Group, which it claimed is “destined to become Andalucía’s ‘flagship’ fruit and vegetable production and export company”.
