California asparagus

A new report by the California Asparagus Commission has said that dry, warm weather has enabled the state's producers to move to full production in all growing areas.

According to the release, the market for asparagus remains strong, with 'ample supplies' being shipped to match demand.

Earlier in the month, the commission reported that a series of cool-weather fronts coming off of the Pacific Ocean had delayed the traditional California asparagus harvest peak this season.

This has now eased off, with the commission's executive director Cherie Watt encouraging retailers to take advantage of the opportunities the vegetable offered.

'The www.calasparagus.com website has a number of market-proven tools designed to help retailers take full advantage of the significant profit opportunity offered by California asparagus,' she said. 'Retailers will find the Merchandising Ideas section especially interesting and useful as they plan their features and promotions for the upcoming Mother's Day and Memorial Day weekends.'

Growers expect to satisfy fresh market demand until well into June, the commission noted.
