US north-west cherries

Northwest Cherry Growers is expecting a solid cherry crop this year, and an early conclusion to the Californian season will see demand strong heading into the 4 July holiday, The Packer has reported.

Current shipment estimates put the crop at around 13-14m boxes, according to Northwest Cherry Growers' president BJ Thurlby, while some other experts have forecast a deal of around 12.5-13m boxes.

"We've got two-and-a-half months of cherries to pick," Mr Thurlby said. "There's a
good crop on the trees."

Warmer weather has meant the expected peak for the cherry deal will be around 26 June, Mr Thurlby said, just two days behind a normal schedule.

California's delayed start to the season had Northwest growers worried about an overlap between the two, but it is now expected the Californian deal will be over by 20 June.

In spite of a wet May, quality and sizing was reported to be good on early varieties.
