To coincide with Breast Cancer Awareness Month in the UK, Sainsbury's has joined forces with its watercress supplier Vitacress Salads to help raise funds for national breast cancer charity The Haven.

For the month between 15 September and 15 October, Sainsbury's is promoting watercress across all of its stores due to its potential for suppressing breast cancer cell development, while Vitacress is making a donation of 5 pence per pack sold to The Haven.

The promotion marks the culmination of a two-year study into the possible impact of watercress on breast cancer development, the results of which were announced on 14 September, with conclusions finding that eating watercress daily can significantly reduce DNA damage to blood cells - considered an important trigger in the development of cancer.

'We chose to support The Haven because its charity takes a holistic approach to breast cancer care, and supports anyone affected by breast cancer with counselling, complementary therapies and nutritional advice, helping people during their recovery to improve their diet, boost their natural defences and increase their energy levels,' said Huw Griffiths, marketing director at Vitacress salads.

The group hopes to raise some £20,000 (€24,000) for The Haven, with all money raised going towards The Haven's crucial support work.
