Honduran trade minister Oscar Kafaty announced that banana exports to the US and EU should reach 25million boxes by year and recover to pre-hurricane Mitch levels of 30m boxes by the end of 2002. This will however depend on whether hurricane Michelle which struck this past week does not prove devastating for the country's banana production. Damage caused by the storms and hurricane which swept the country and much of Central America as well as Cuba at the end of October and beginning of November is as yet unquantified.
