Schools nationwide are set to receive online lessons in spuds from potato experts at Tesco.

The supermarket has teamed-up with three of its key potato suppliers to create an innovative website which aims to teach kids how potatoes are grown, packed and end up on their plate.

It is hoped that the site, found at www.itsaspudslife.co.uk will become a teaching tool for teachers across the country, helping them to improve their pupils' awareness of the science behind potatoes and how to cook and eat them as part of a healthy diet.

Tesco's potato buyer, Roy Maynard, pictured, explained: 'Itsaspudslife gives children a tremendous insight into the UK potato industry and will make them appreciate the effort that goes into getting spuds from the fields to their plates.

'It is worrying that many children in the UK don't know how potatoes grow – many believe they grow on trees and so this project takes a positive step towards eradicating that myth.

'The website is part of our quest to back British agriculture and locally grown produce and to work with local communities and schools to improve their knowledge of growing, selling and eating fruit and veg.

Itsaspudslife has been developed in partnership with suppliers MBM Produce and Romney Marsh and St Nicholas Court Farms in Kent.
