The unit is designed to store nine layers of six punnets, and the fridge has a specially calibrated spring which raises the display on removal of each layer.

The size of the unit allows cool air to flow around the products maintaining good shelf life. It works on a freeze thaw cycle, controlled by temperature monitors which provide a digital readout in store.

Stuart Stubbins, M&S produce buyer, said: 'The Chillevator is a very important trial. A chilled hot spot for impulse purchase has wider implications for retailing seasonal produce.'
