A reduction in flower exports is expected from Zimbabwe this season, according to the Export Flower Growers' Association (EFGA).

Chief executive of EFGA, Mary Dunphy said the reduction was a result of reduced acreage. 'There were no expansions by flower growers this season because of uncertainty on the part of the farmers,' Dunphy explained. 'However there have been some farmers who have benefited from land redistribution who have ventured into the crop.' Dunphy cited the huge capital outlay required to start a flower project as off-putting.

'Prices are still very low,' she said. This coupled with the flooding of the markets with flowers from other sources has seen the continued depression of prices.' Valentine's Day celebrations brought a reprieve on the prices of flowers in the international market last month and Zimbabwe could well be exporting up to 150 varieties of roses and at least 15 varieties of protea this year. Summer flowers such as solidaster and solidago are also grown in the country.
