Murcia federation of co-ops Fecoam reports that growers are starting to transplant melons and watermelons as the salads and vegetable season in the region draws to a close.

The winter has been a troubled one for many producers in the area who are making the most of a spell of seasonably normal temperatures reaching highs of 25-26°C this week following a cold snap 10 days ago.

Temperatures in the north-west of the region fell early last week and threatened some stone fruit plantations, most notably the Bulida variety of apricots which are grown for both the fresh and processing markets. It is too early to tell of any specific effects on the fruit.

'Any damage is likely to be light and very localised as is usual with the effects of frost,' said a Fecoam spokesman.

Conditions remain dry in an area which is traditionally very needy of water.
