Christian Salvesen plc, the European logistics company, has announced the appointment of Brian Gaunt to the new position of managing director UK.

Gaunt will join Christian Salvesen's executive committee, reporting to group chief executive Edward Roderick, with responsibility for managing the group's UK logistics businesses.

Gaunt, 44, was previously group logistics director of the Big Food Group, responsible for the supply chain and distribution across the two key businesses, Iceland Foods and Booker.

From 1995 to 2001 he was with Asda Wal-Mart, initially as supply director in the UK, where he developed the supply chain function. He then took up the position of European supply chain director where he was responsible for the strategic development of the supply chain function in the UK and Germany.

Roderick commented: “In Brian, we are delighted to have identified such a strong candidate for what is a key new post.

“In recent months we have been restructuring our UK businesses into a single entity, centred around the core skills of transport and warehousing. As well as improving profitability and maximising operational efficiency, the new structure will enable us to bring a wider range of skills and perspectives to bear on sales and marketing, service and customer retention.

“Brian's depth of logistics and supply chain experience as well as his manufacturing and retail knowledge will be invaluable as we extract maximum benefit from the inherent qualities of our UK businesses under this new structure.”
