Grocery sales drive 2003 retail performance

Grocery sales have driven a 5.5 per cent increase in retail performance in 2003, according to a new report from Information Resources.

Quarter four of the year outstripped the same period in 2002, with growth at 6.1 per cent for 2003 compared to 5.7 per cent in the previous year.

Grocery sales alone rose by 5.4 per cent, and chilled foods continued to contribute most to this sector fuelled by sales of ready meals. There was also double digit growth in salad vegetables.

While growth in non-food sales continues to surpass that of grocery sales, the value of non-food sales still accounts for less than a third of total sales through these outlets.
