Kids get creative with salad

As the work of Tracy Emin and Damien Hirst continue to provoke disputes among creative types about whether they really deserve to be labelled as ‘art’, a new competition could be about to add to the debate.

The Salad Bag Art Competition wants kids to create pictures out of salad bags and then send in photos of their creation.

Mark Speight, the zany presenter of BBC kids’ art programme smART, created a self-portrait out of bagged salad leaves and other vegetables, while kids’ cookery expert Carola Weymouth designed a ‘healthy handbag’ and a ship.

The competition is the result of a recent survey, which found that 38 percent of parents found that making a picture of food with ‘really helps their children eat at meal times’, and nearly a quarter of under-16s rarely or never try new foods.

Kip Winter-Cox of the Fresh Prepared Salads Producer Group, said: “The campaign encourages consumers to reach for a bag of salad at the supermarket, safe in the knowledge that it is a responsibly produced product and that they are making a healthy and tasty choice.”
