French truck drivers are planning a two-day strike later this week following the breakdown of talks in a dispute over pay. The walkout, which is being organised by the CFDT union, is due to take place on 18 and 19 December and is designed to caused maximum disruption to retailers and suppliers in the run up to Christmas.

CFDT says a wage freeze that has been in place during the past two years means its members are now earning less than the minimum wage. The union claims that a tax credit scheme introduced by the government and falling fuel prices mean haulage firms are able to afford the €100 monthly net increase it is demanding for its members.

In Belgium truck drivers are today taking part in a 24-hour general strike over government reforms designed to eliminate the budget deficit, which has brought the country to a standstill.
