Oranges were a strong performer in the opening months of 2015

Spain's fruit and vegetable exports grew on a year-on-year basis during the opening two months of 2015, according to figures from the Directorate General of Customs from the Spanish Ministry of Economy and Finance.

The statistics, processed by Fepex, showed growth of 3 per cent in volume and 5 per cent in value, up to 2.4m tonnes and €2.25bn respectively.

Fruit exports climbed 9.7 per cent in both volume and value, to 1.2m tonnes and €1.05bn, driven primarily by strong performances by oranges and berries.

For vegetables, exports actually fell 3 per cent in volume to 1.2m tonnes, while increasing 1 per cent in value to €1.21bn.

The two most exported products in the vegetable category, tomatoes and lettuce, both fell back in value and volume.
