Scottish Ava strawberries will hit supermarket shelves next week, with recent warm weather salvaging a delayed start to the season.
Ava varieties produced by an exclusive group of growers and distributed by Angus Soft Fruits will go on sale at Morrisons, Aldi, Co-op and Sainsbury’s stores across the UK.
The North-East of Scotland has the ideal climate for growing the variety with warm days and cool nights. The three Ava strawberry varieties have been specially developed for improved flavour, appearance, shelf life, disease resistance and yield by Angus Soft Fruits’ in-house breeding programme.
A cold start to they year delayed harvesting of the crop, which is known for its confetti like white petals, yet a recent upturn in temperature has brought the season back on course.
The variety was developed in Britain in the 1990s by Angus Soft Fruits, after more than 20 growers spent six years breeding the variety for Scottish conditions.
