Andrew Fenton and Brian Gargiulo have been re-elected to the board of Horticulture New Zealand, the organisation that represents the country’s 7,000 commercial fruit, vegetable, berryfruit and olive growers.

Fenton is a kiwifruit and avocado grower from Te Puke and the president of HortNZ.

Gargiulo is a tomato grower with operations in Christchurch and Nelson and is the vice-president of HortNZ.

The unsuccessful candidate was Jeff Wesley, managing director of Turners and Growers, a prominent player in the horticulture industry with direct investment in growing operations including citrus, kiwifruit, top fruit, tomatoes and other greenhouse vegetables.

Directors serve a three-year term, with a portion of the board retiring by rotation each year.

Candidates are nominated by product groups and local grower associations affiliated to HortNZ. If there are more nominations than places available, as there was this year, then individual growers vote through a postal voting system.
