AU Melbourne market Epping

Melbourne Market’s sustainable and innovative initiatives have scored it the ABA100 Australia Business Award for Sustainability.

The wholesale fruit, vegetables and flower market moved to its new Epping site on 31 August last year, with sustainability key to its design and construction.

“Perhaps one of our greatest achievements at the new Melbourne Market facility is the ability to incorporate world-class technology to reduce our impact on the environment.” Melbourne Market Authority chairman Stephen McArthur said. “This award win recognises the intelligent design of a site that has been custom made to meet the needs of a growing industry.”

The design of the market has improved its environment impact by reducing its use of water, energy and reducing wastage.

The Australian Business Award adds to Melbourne Market’s recent win, awarded the World Union of Wholesale Markets 2016 Market Awards for Reducing Food Loss and Food Waste.

“While sustainable thinking was at the forefront during design and construction, it is also embedded in the day to day operations to ensure the infrastructure is utilised to its full potential,” said McArthur.

The Australia Business Awards recognise innovation in Australia businesses, with initiatives evaluated on their transformative capabilities and outcomes of their initiatives.
