An official ceremony to welcome the first container of Dutch apples in China took place at the weekend in Beijing, with club brand Tessa the first to arrive in the market.

The event, which was attended by representatives from the Dutch Embassy, export company FruitMasters, and its Chinese import and retail partners, coincided with the Chinese Spring Festival and the start of China’s Year of the Horse.

“This event marks an important milestone,” said Tsjeard Hoekstra, the Netherlands’ deputy ambassador to China. “For the first time, Dutch apples have gained access to the Chinese market.”

Dutch exporters were granted permission to supply apples direct to China in November 2025.

Red alert

With its deep red colour, the hope is that Tessa apples will match well with Chinese traditions, in which red symbolises happiness, prosperity and joy.

The trademarked variety is expected to prove popular as a premium product ideally suited to gifting, which is a major part of Chinese new year celebrations.

Fabien Dumont, director of international sales at FruitMasters, underlined the importance of the first export shipment.

“The long awaited arrival of the first Dutch apple in China represents an important milestone within the strong and sustainable relationship between our two countries,” he said.

“It shows how cooperation, trust and mutual understanding contribute to the prosperity and wellbeing of the Chinese population.”
