The project provides a high-quality Italian alternative to lettuce from major European growing regions

Two Italian companies have teamed up to develop the supply of Sicilian-grown iceberg lettuce.

Agricola Azzura – partly owned by the Orsero Group – and BioAretusa Farm said the initiative aims to leverage the former’s organisational and commercial capabilities and the latter’s agronomic expertise to offer the market a consistent supply of high-quality lettuce grown closer than produce from other European regions.

The companies worked in partnership with seed companies and geneticists to identify varieties particularly well-suited to the microclimate of the Syracuse plain, capable of ensuring firm texture, crispness, high dry matter content, and an average shelf-life of approximately 15 days. Production runs from early October to the end of May.

Through its integrated supply chain, Agricola Azzurra supports the development of agricultural projects aimed at creating value across the entire production chain. Drawing on its experience and established presence in key Italian agricultural regions, the company works alongside partners to cultivate produce that meets the needs of both retailers and consumers.

The area’s proximity to the sea, a mild year-round climate, fertile soil, and access to calcium-rich water from deep aquifers create a unique microclimate for iceberg lettuce.

“Advanced fertigation systems – featuring software to manage irrigation and nutritional needs, alongside precision agriculture sensors and tools – optimise resource use and ensure balanced crop development,” the companies said.

Plant-based biostimulants and microalgae derivatives will also play a crucial role in production, promoting cell growth while further enhancing the product’s crispness and shelf-life.

Alongside agronomic innovation, the project employs state-of-the-art machinery for field operations, mechanical weeding, and load handling, aiming to boost production efficiency and ensure maximum safety for the workforce.

The iceberg lettuce is harvested by hand at the peak of ripeness and packaged directly in the field, minimising processing time.

After picking, the lettuce is rapidly transported to the company’s facility – equipped with cold storage and modern processing lines – ensuring an unbroken cold chain and complete traceability throughout the supply chain.

According to the companies, a commitment to sustainability is a cornerstone of the project.

“Photovoltaic systems power production activities with renewable energy, significantly reducing the carbon footprint,” they explained. “Advanced fertigation and climate monitoring systems optimise water and fertiliser use, reducing waste and increasing efficiency.

“he use of machinery dedicated to mechanical weeding also makes it possible to limit the use of chemicals, while the adoption of integrated farming protocols reflects an approach that prioritises the balance between productivity, environmental protection, and food safety.

“Agricultural tradition, technological innovation, and respect for natural resources thus constitute the three pillars driving the development of this supply chain project – an initiative launched with the aim of showcasing a Sicilian iceberg lettuce that successfully combines quality, freshness, and sustainability,” they said.
