Citrus exports from Spain’s southern Almería region increased by 25 per cent during the first seven months of 2011, up from to 14,200 tonnes in 2010 to more than 17,600 tonnes this year.

Although a relatively small part of the Andalusian province’s total exports (at around 1 per cent), Almería’s citrus producers achieved a 4.5 per cent rise in overall turnover to €11m from the same period of 2010.

According to the figures, provided by the regional government of Andalusia, almost 39 per cent of Almería’s total citrus exports, worth €4.3m, are shipped to Germany, with France, Italy and the Netherlands also major export destinations.
