Asda has reduced the price of 1kg of loose bananas from 68p to 58p, The Grocer has reported.
In the week that Tesco initiated its Big Price Drop, Asda's provocation could mark the beginning of another battle in UK retailers' ongoing banana price war.
Bananas have not been sold in the major UK supermarkets for less than 60p/kg since November 2010 and in April this year Asda was charging 77p/kg.
Tesco, Sainsbury's, Morrisons and Waitrose are yet to respond to Asda's latest move.
