UAE-based fresh produce manufacturer Barakat Quality Plus has commissioned its newest plant in the ‘Food & Beverage Zone’ at Dubai Industrial City (DI), according to a report in Trade Arabia.

The 200,000 sq ft facility has a daily processing capacity of 200 tonnes of fresh sanitised vegetable produce, including peeled fresh potato, onion, carrot and vegetable crudités, as well as leafy greens and mixed salads, and complements the group's first unit at the Jebel Ali Industrial Area, which has a capacity of 70 tonnes of fresh fruits for juices, smoothies and fresh-cut fruit.

CEO Jeyaram Subramanian commented: 'Our products are renowned for their trademark freshness and preservative-free quality. Thus, securing an ultra-quick and seamless manufacturing, dispatch and delivery process is all the more vital for us. Dubai Industrial City’s close proximity to the Al Maktoum International Airport and Jebel Ali Sea Port, the two gateways through which we import and export fruits and vegetables, was a decisive factor to build our new plant in DI.'

He added that the facility was chosen with the future in mind. 'Our investment at DI also gives us additional room to expand in the future and build another processing unit as and when future market conditions may require,' he said. 'We are particularly happy that the new factory is both eco-friendly and cost-efficient. The recycling is also designed to reduce our maintenance and operational costs,' he said.

Barakat Quality Plus's food plants are reportedly the only facilities in the UAE that completely recycle water, with approximately 200,000 litres of wastewater being turned into potable water and a further 30,000 litres of grey water being used for sewerage and irrigation.
