The Cítricos Valencianos (Valencian Citrus) PGI is to add new varieties of oranges and mandarins to the quality seal. Announcing the plan at last week’s Fruit Attraction, the regulatory council said more details would be released once it had received final approval from European authorities.

During the fair, the PGI also announced that it had become an official partner of Spain’s 5 a Day Association to promote the consumption of fruits and vegetables.

The PGI said it had welcomed visitors from 15 countries – including representatives from Asia, Africa, South America, and Europe – who had expressed an interest in the traceability, rigorous oversight, and high quality of its fruit offer.

“This level of interest underscores the growing importance consumers worldwide place on the origin of their fruit,” it said.

The stand also received a visit from Miguel Barrachina, the regional minister for agriculture, water, livestock, and fisheries of the Valencian Community. Other visitors included representatives from agricultural unions, political parties, cooperatives, citrus exporters, the fruit industry, specialised media outlets, and operators interested in registering with the PGI – specifically, packing houses that have already expressed their intention to work with the ‘Naranja Valenciana’ (Valencian Orange) brand promoted by the PGI.
