Ecuadorean port handles more than 14,000 TEUs in seven days in September

Contecon Guayaquil achieved a new milestone in September with its handling of 14,000-plus TEUs in seven days – the highest recorded for the same period since the terminal commenced operations in 2007.
Contecon said the achievement was down to infrastructure and technology investments totalling more than US$390mn over the past 18 years. These include the cold storage facility inaugurated in January through a US43.5mn partnership with Cool Carriers. The warehouse has handled more than 3mn boxes of fruits to date, preserving product quality while reducing waiting times.
“This achievement is possible because of customer trust, employee commitment, and the support from Ecuadorean authorities and our partners. We continue to work with clients on long-term planning to build sustainable relationships,” said Jesús Cáceres, Contecon Guayaquil’s CEO.
Contecon Guayaquil is the largest multipurpose terminal within the world’s largest banana-exporting port. Currently, around 59 per cent of imports from Asia enter Ecuador through Contecon.
In early 2026, the terminal is set to launch a US$10mn project to develop a Special Economic Development Zone to further strengthen its position as a regional hub.
According to the Chamber of Maritime Affairs of Ecuador, the new record demonstrates Contecon’s role in strengthening port infrastructure and competitiveness. It also highlighted investments in modernisation, digital platforms, and trade with Asia as drivers of export growth.
