Chiquita Brands International is to close its deciduous fruit business.

The US-based company has told Fruitnet.com that the 'transition is necessary to align efforts focusing on the core business' of bananas and salads.

Chiquita's first step towards the exit door will be the cessation of its California grape operations when the current season ends.

The decision tallies with those made in 2010, when Chiquita stopped melon sales, and earlier this year, when it announced it would leave the avocado sector.

The company has other businesses in California, as well as Chile and Mexico, that will not be affected by its latest plan.
