Dominican Republic banana plantation

Exports of organic bananas from the Dominican Republic doubled in value from 2005 to 2010 according to a report in Hoy Digital.

Shipments totalled US$127m in 2010, up from US$45m five years earlier, with Europe and the US the main destination for the fruit.

The country’s Ministry of Agriculture has invested more than US$8m in programmes to control the spread black sigatoka, which has caused widespread damage to plantations in recent years.
