Emirates plane in Ghana

Emirates SkyCargo has launched a new freight service on the United Arab Emirates-Africa trade route, with a Boeing 747-400F operating every Friday between Dubai and Ghana delivering up to 117 tonnes of cargo, including fresh produce.

The freight division of Emirates will see the service fly in to Kotoka International Airport via Lome in Togo on the outbound journey, and will return to Dubai via Frankfurt in Germany.

Goods from Ghana, which will include pineapples, mangoes and a variety of fresh vegetables, will be distributed from Dubai to locations across the Middle East, Europe, the Far East and the US.

'Ghana is rich in natural resources and recognised as one of Africa's leading economies,' said Hiran Perera, Emirates' senior vice-president of cargo planning and freighters. 'This economic strength means it will play a pivotal role in the future development of Africa, making it an important trade route with tremendous scope for growth.

Africa is a key market for Emirates SkyCargo,' he added. 'We already operate 20 locations and with Harare and Lusaka set to join our network in February 2012, we look forward to contributing to its continued economic development by facilitating more international trade between the continent and our ever-expanding network of more than 110 destinations.'
