The EU remains the key export market for Spain’s fresh fruit and vegetables, accounting for more than 83 per cent of the total volume shipped during the January-May period of 2026.

Some 4.64mn tonnes of fresh produce was exported during the five months in question, down 1.4 per cent year-on-year.

By contrast, value increased by 7.7 per cent to €8.29bn, representing 82 per cent of the sector’s foreign sales revenue, according to data from the Department of Customs and Excise Duties, processed by Fepex.

Exports to countries outside the EU totalled 918,863 tonnes, down 2.5 per cent on the same period of 2025. However, their value rose by 2.9 per cent to €1.816bn.

Non-EU destinations accounted for 16.5 per cent of the volume and nearly 18 per cent of the total export value, Fepex reported.

Within Europe, non-EU countries – primarily the UK, Switzerland, Norway, and other nearby markets – imported 787,270 tonnes (down 5 per cent), while value increased by 3 per cent to €1.649bn.

Markets outside Europe absorbed 131,593 tonnes of Spanish fruit and vegetables; while this volume remained low, it showed 16.3 per cent growth compared to the same period the previous year.

In terms of value, exports reached €167mn, a 2 per cent increase.

”This trend reflects the difficulty of expanding presence in non-EU countries, where phytosanitary barriers, market access requirements, and higher logistics costs persist, limiting the growth of Spanish exports,” Fepex added.
