FDA

The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has missed its own deadline to begin re-registrations of domestic and foreign food facilities under the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA).

The re-registration period was due to begin on 1 October, lasting until 31 December, but the FDA said on its website that the forms will not be available yet.

FDA recommends that businesses check its website at a later date or sign up for FSMA updates to be informed when the forms are available.

The FSMA law, signed by president Obama on 4 January 2011, requires that all domestic and foreign facilities that manufacture, process, pack or hold food for human or animal consumption in the US must re-register with the agency every two years.

Some 420,000 US and foreign food facilities are required to renew their registration with the FDA.

Registrations which do not go through the re-registration process will be cancelled and/or voided by the FDA.
