QR code allows users to view information on traceability, sustainability, food safety, and certifications
Fedemco, the Spanish Federation of Wooden Packaging and its Components, has developed a brand-new tool to improve traceability and help companies comply with new EU packaging rules.
Accessible via a unique QR code on each box, the digital passport will allow consumers to immediately view key information on traceability, sustainability, recyclability, food safety, and certifications such as Ecowoox, Grow, and others like FSC and PEFC.
Fedemco said the initiative not only facilitates regulatory compliance but also provides tangible benefits for the entire industry and the end consumer. “The digital passport strengthens trust in the supply chain, offering consumers direct access to the most relevant information,” said CEO Emilio Pérez. “A QR code on a wooden packaging provides consumers with transparency regarding its origin, sustainability, and recyclability, allowing them to make more informed and responsible purchases.”
Pérez said the digital passport – the federation’s first consumer-facing initiative – is designed to help consumers make more informed choices about the products they choose to buy. “As it is rolled out, we expect to see an increase in demand for wooden packaging,” he said.
After a first semester focused on forming a multidisciplinary team with the technology partners who developed the digital platform, the project is now in its pilot phase. Unanimously approved at the Federation’s general assembly, the digital passport is already being designed with input from several companies in the sector
“Companies see the regulations as a challenge, but also as an opportunity for differentiation. More than 80 per cent of fruit and vegetable packaging in Spain and Portugal already has the Ecowoox certification and will now be able to showcase it to the end consumer,” Pérez continued.
Fedemco will offer technical support, training materials, and a practical guide available to the entire value chain.
