Agrexco Early Sweet Grapes 2010

Agrexco has announced that its table grape season is scheduled to begin between the 15-18 May this year, with the first fruit of the campaign to hit Europe's shores coming in on 25 May.

According to Agrexco, some 1,800 tonnes will be exported from the country this year, with the season running through until September.

'We are starting with the Early Sweet variety which now accounts for 90 per cent of our early season – our busiest weeks being at the start of June,' noted Liran Laffer, product manager Agrexco. 'Next to arrive will be the Flame Seedless and Sugarone varieties with Thompson and Crimson coming in towards the end of our season in August to September.'

Oded Yacovson, general manager of Agrexco in the UK, added that more growers joined the group on the strength of its performance last year, when customers were provided with fruit of high brix level and good berry size during the window between Chile and Egypt.

'This year, although Israeli growers are suffering 30 per cent less yield due to weather conditions being unfavourable for grape cultivation, it has meant that the reduction in fruit on the vine has allowed for a higher sugar level and bigger berry size – both important factors in grape production,' he said.
