Another 1,000ha of production to be added this year, says national banana association

Honduran banana acreage is expected to increase by 1,000ha this year, according to Sandra Deras, president of the country’s Banana Producers and Exporters Association.
“There are high expectations for 2026 for banana producers. We also expect an increase in cultivated areas to become more competitive, since countries like Guatemala have doubled their production while Honduras has reduced it,” Deras said.
She projected that increasing the area dedicated to banana production would generate approximately 1,500 new jobs and pave the way for new investments in boosting the country’s export offer.
Deras highlighted that Guatemala has an advantage over Honduras in that it offers lower interest rates, making them more competitive and allowing for increased production.
