Italian kiwifruit company says it has passed a number of major milestones in first-ever sustainability report
Italian premium kiwifruit company Jingold says almost 96 per cent of the packaging material it uses – including fruit stickers – is now recycled, while recyclable plastic makes up just over 4 per cent.
The group announced the achievement in its first-ever sustainability report, published this week, as part of continued efforts to set corporate and environmental responsibility goals, and to work with partners and customers to make improvements.
And it said it had worked with employees, producers, customers, suppliers, and local communities to identify a total of 16 sustainability priorities – including product quality and safety, supply chain management, the protection of natural resources and worker well-being, and the promotion of healthy nutrition and lifestyles.
“With this first sustainability report, we wanted to make a voluntary choice, ahead of regulatory deadlines, because we believe that sustainability is not a finish line, but an ongoing process,” said Jingold’s general manager Alessandro Fornari.
“It is a tool for transparency and accountability, allowing us to engage all stakeholders in our supply chain and strengthen our corporate vision to generate lasting, shared value.”
Strict standards
In 2024, Jingold measured its greenhouse gas emissions against recognised international standards for the first time, and launched a number of mitigation and offsetting projects.
Those actions include photovoltaic energy, certified carbon credits for air travel, eco-sustainable packaging, and the cultivation of kiwifruit itself, which absorbs carbon dioxide.
The company has also promoted drip irrigation, and this year plans to certify that water usage according to GlobalGAP Spring’s stricter biodiversity rules.
It said it had also undertaken to support organic farming, and ensure a transparent, certified supply chain with full traceability through its Jingold Farm digital platform.
Meanwhile, it has identified food safety, circular packaging, responsible pesticide use, full traceability, and waste reduction among its other priorities.
“This document is not just a report; it represents the synthesis of the values that guide our company: respect for the environment, efficient use of resources, consumer protection, innovation and high quality standards, and attention to people and local communities,” emphasised Jingold president Patrizio Neri.
“Sharing the results achieved today also means making a commitment to continue growing consistently, strengthening Jingold’s role as a global kiwifruit specialist and a leading company for a sustainable supply chain.”
