UK-based retailer Marks and Spencer (M&S) has launched a new apple variety that will also help raise money for charity.

Amelia's Apple, a variety grown in Kent, southern England, has a 'distinct yellow colour with a zingy flavour and a lemon fizz', according to the group.

Named in memory of the daughter of a store manager who died from kidney cancer earlier in the year, 10 per cent of the money made from the sale of each pack will help fund a kidney transplant centre at Great Ormond Street Hospital.

'We are thrilled to be launching Amelia's Apple and helping to raise funds for Great Ormond Street Hospital,' said M&S apple expert Phillip Symons. 'Our customers can enjoy a delicious new British-grown apple while supporting such an important cause.'

The apple was made available in UK stores on 24 November, with a pack of four costing £1.99 (€2.41).
