Marseille-Fos has announced that it handled 627,000 tonnes of fresh produce in 2007, an increase of 11.4 per cent over 2005, thereby further reinforcing its position as France's leading port for fruit and vegetables.
The port's most important trading partners were Israel and Algeria, accounting for 225,000 tonnes and 76,000 tonnes, and representing a rise of 20 per cent and 13 per cent respectively. Trade with Tunisia was down slightly at 64,000 tonnes, while Moroccan trade rose by 23 per cent to 24,000 tonnes. Argentina, thanks to a jump in imports of citrus and soft fruit of 47 per cent, increased its volumes to 30,000 tonnes.
According to a recent press release, traffic at Marseilles-Fos for January to February is up 2 per cent compared with the same period in 2007, to 16.4m tonnes.
