Leading Swiss retailer Migros has confirmed plans to work more closely with the country's largest federation of organic producers Bio Suisse and to source a greater number of its members' produce for sale in its stores.

In a joint statement, the two companies underlined their commitment to delivering organically produced fruit and vegetables to the general public, pointing out that the promotion of organic farming and maintaining high quality standards was 'a common concern'.

A long-term cooperation agreement between the two groups has now been renewed, with both parties stating their intention to work together in developing new commercial projects.

'Collaboration with Bio Suisse is important for us,' said Oskar Sager, head of marketing at Migros. 'We welcome the opportunity to work with a competent partner on what is a very integral part of our overall range.'

Jürg Schenkel, head of marketing at Bio Suisse, commented: 'Migros contributes significantly to the success of organic and makes a very positive contribution to the development of Swiss organic farming along the entire value chain.'

The retailer's own organic label Migros-Bio gives preference to Swiss products, with the retailer sourcing products exclusively from farms certified under Bio Suisse's system of certification.

The range currently comprises around 1,000 different products and last year generated annual turnover of more than €300m, up 14 per cent on the previous 12-month period.

Bio Suisse is Switzerland's largest organic farming organisation, counting some 5,600 individual companies and 32 separate associations among its members.

More than 800 processing and trade companies have a licence contract with Bio Suisse to use the group's eponymous label.
